Reddit Users May Soon be Able to Put NFTs as a Profile Picture

Reddit will reportedly become the second social media platform to allow users to add NFTs to their profile picture.

Reddit will reportedly become the second social media platform to allow users to add NFTs to their profile picture, merely two days after Twitter announced the newest feature. Apparently, Reddit has begun testing this option.

This is not the same as its CryptoSnoop Ethereum-based NFTs, which were published in 2021. Reddit’s engineers, on the other hand, have yet to determine how NFT integration will be implemented.

Reddit told TechCrunch that the NFT trial is still in its early stages and is not accessible to the general public just yet. Tim Rathschmidt, a spokesperson for Reddit went on to say “we’re always exploring ways to provide value for users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we’re testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership. It’s a small, internal test and no decisions have been made about expanding or rolling out the capability.”

For a long time, Reddit has been pursuing several NFT efforts. NFT.reddit.com is a specialized page on the platform dedicated to NFT-related actions. At the moment, the NFT domain is solely dedicated to CryptoSnoos, which stars the virtual collectibles of Reddit. The “Snoo” is just Reddit’s symbol Aliem, while the collectibles are just iterations of Snoo’s graphics.

Nima Owji, a developer, pioneered the noticing of the new NFT test. On the Reddit app, the developer discovered a banner promoting the idea. This graphic, according to Owji, could signify Reddit’s growth past CryptoSnoos, which would constitute a potentially significant expansion.

In what looked to be a test compilation of NFTs on OpenSea, developer Owji discovered similarities in Reddit’s code. The discovery happened on Rinkeby, the Ethereum test network which gives the opportunity to carry out blockchain-related experiments to users.

Some Redditors, however, are dissatisfied with Reddit’s entry into NFTs. These users have taken the chance to air their dissatisfaction on the platform.
