The Kosovo government proposed a ban on the mining of cryptocurrencies, in a bid to curb electricity consumption in the face of the country’s energy crisis.
The decision was made in accordance with the Technical Committee for Energy Supply, the Economy Minister Artane Rizvanolli announced on Tuesday that Kosovo will be banning all crypto mining operations within its territory as part of the 60-day state of emergency declared in the name of the energy crisis.
A Kosovo citizen speaking for Reuters (insisting upon remaining anonymous), who owns about 40 Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) – said he paid about 170€ a month for electricity and earns about 2,400€ a month from mining crypto.
According to Reuters, cryptocurrency mining has been surging in Northern Kosovo which is populated by a majority of Serbs who refrain from paying electrical energy.
Presently, more than 40% of the energy consumed in Kosovo is imported during the winter as the demand for electricity increases for heating buildings and households.
Kosovo will uphold the newly set measures until March 6, 2022.
