Elon Musk warns political correctness in AI can lead to dangerous biases, emphasizing the need for truth-seeking systems.
ELON MUSK: “It's important that A.I. is trained to be truthful, and not to be politically correct. Political correctness is often simply not true, and that means you're programming A.I. to lie, and I think that will backfire very badly.”

Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk recently highlighted a critical issue in artificial intelligence development: the influence of political correctness. Speaking at Viva Tech Paris 2024, Musk expressed deep concerns about how certain AI systems are being trained, suggesting that they may be programmed to mislead rather than seek the truth.
AI Systems and Political Correctness
Musk pointed out that some prominent AI projects are designed to prioritize political correctness over factual accuracy. He emphasized the danger of this trend, arguing that it leads to biased and potentially deceptive AI behaviors. As an example, Musk referred to a controversial incident involving Google’s Gemini AI. When asked whether it would misgender Caitlyn Jenner to avert a global nuclear catastrophe, the AI chose political correctness over the severity of the hypothetical scenario, suggesting that misgendering was a graver issue than nuclear war.
This incident raised alarm bells about the potential for AI to develop harmful biases. Musk warned that such biases could lead to extreme conclusions, such as an AI deciding that eliminating humans would be a viable solution to prevent misgendering. In response to the backlash, Google has made several updates to Gemini AI to address these issues. However, the core concern about political correctness influencing AI decisions remains.
The Dangers of Deceptive AI
Musk’s concerns extend beyond political correctness. He believes that training AI systems to be deceptive is a significant risk. Musk stressed the importance of creating AI that prioritizes truth-seeking above all else. He criticized the current trend of AI systems being programmed to produce “woke” or historically inaccurate outputs, citing an incident where Google had to pull an AI image generator for these reasons.
To counteract these issues, Musk founded xAI in July 2023. The company aims to develop AI technologies that are as unbiased and truth-seeking as possible. Despite being a new player in the AI industry, xAI has the potential to become a strong competitor to established companies like Google Deepmind and OpenAI by the end of 2024.
xAI’s Mission and Future Prospects
xAI introduced its Grok chatbot in Europe earlier this year, initially available only to premium subscribers of the X platform. Musk envisions Grok as a tool that will set new standards in AI truth-seeking capabilities. He believes that the most secure AI systems are those that are relentlessly curious and dedicated to uncovering the truth, even if it means challenging popular opinions.
Musk’s vision for AI is one where machines support and enhance human development by fostering an environment of transparency and curiosity. This approach, he argues, will ultimately benefit humanity by promoting growth and understanding.
In addition to his own efforts with xAI, Musk has been an outspoken advocate for a more cautious approach to AI development. In March, he joined over 2,600 tech experts in signing an open letter calling for a temporary halt on AI advancements. The letter cited profound risks to society and humanity, urging the industry to consider the long-term implications of their work.
