Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook, has publicly acknowledged its failure to prevent the misuse of Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana’s image in cryptocurrency scam advertisements. This admission comes in the wake of a prolonged legal tussle, culminating in Meta’s commitment to bolstering its platform’s safety measures.

Wissam Al Mana, a distinguished businessman from the Middle East and formerly married to renowned celebrity Janet Jackson, became an unwitting participant in misleading cryptocurrency schemes in 2019. Scammers exploited his image in advertisements designed to lure Middle Eastern investors into questionable crypto ventures. The ensuing legal battle, which spanned three years in Dublin courts, stemmed from Al Mana’s efforts to seek justice for the harm to his reputation and the distress and embarrassment caused by these unauthorized advertisements.

Meta’s Response to the Incident

Meta has now publicly accepted its role in allowing the circulation of these deceptive ads, noting the reputational damage, distress, and embarrassment suffered by Mr. Al Mana. In its response, the company has expressed deep regret and has committed to preventing similar occurrences in the future. While the specific details of the settlement remain under wraps, handled by the Irish law firm Ronan Daly Jermyn, Meta’s acknowledgment marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by fraudulent online advertisements.

This incident with Wissam Al Mana is not isolated. The misuse of high-profile individuals in fraudulent cryptocurrency ads is a recurring issue across social media platforms. Ireland’s foreign minister Micheál Martin and English financial expert Martin Lewis have previously pursued legal actions against Google and Meta, respectively, for similar reasons. Following these incidents, Meta had already taken steps to refine its ad-review processes and introduce new reporting tools.

Despite existing measures, experts highlight that scammers often employ false identities to evade detection, as evidenced by the untraceable names linked to the Al Mana ads.
