Binance Founder CZ to Remain in the US Until Sentencing

Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, is now required to remain in the United States until his sentencing. This decision came from a Seattle district court, where Judge Richard Jones highlighted the risk of Zhao fleeing if allowed to return to the United Arab Emirates. Zhao, who pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering on November 21, could face a prison term of up to 18 months. He has consented to not contest any sentence within this duration.

The Judge’s Concerns and Rationale

Judge Jones expressed concerns over Zhao’s substantial international assets and lack of connections within the United States. These factors, along with Zhao’s strong ties to the UAE, where his family resides, led to the judge’s decision. The court’s decision aims to ensure Zhao’s presence in the US until his sentencing on February 23, 2024.

Currently, Zhao is out on a $175 million bond, a sum largely considered beyond the US government’s direct control. This bond permits Zhao unrestricted travel within the United States and allows his family to visit him. In November, Binance and Zhao reached a $4.3 billion settlement with US regulators. This settlement acknowledged violations of the Bank Secrecy Act and operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, leading to Zhao stepping down as CEO of Binance.

This situation underscores the intensifying scrutiny on cryptocurrency exchanges and their compliance with international financial laws. Binance’s decision to withdraw its licensing bid in Abu Dhabi, although claimed to be unrelated to the US settlement, adds another layer to the ongoing narrative. Zhao’s case will be closely watched as it may set precedents for how cryptocurrency industry leaders are treated under US law.
